Punch-kun's Story
From a heartbreaking beginning to a global movement
A Difficult Beginning (July 2025)
During an extreme summer heatwave in July 2025, a baby Japanese macaque was born at Ichikawa City Zoo in Chiba Prefecture, Japan. Zoo staff named him Punch-kun. His mother, overwhelmed by the heat and a difficult birth, abandoned him within hours. Staff immediately stepped in to provide around-the-clock care.
The Plushie That Changed Everything
Looking for ways to comfort the lonely infant, zoo staff placed an IKEA Djungelskog orangutan plush toy in his enclosure. Punch immediately clung to it. The bond between the tiny macaque and his plushie became the most heartwarming image of the year. IKEA would later report a massive surge in sales of this exact plush.
Going Viral (Months 1–3)
Videos of Punch cuddling his plushie spread on TikTok, Instagram, and X (Twitter), reaching tens of millions of views. The hashtag #HangInTherePunch trended globally, uniting animal lovers from every corner of the world.
The Reintegration Crisis (February 2026)
In February 2026, zoo staff began reintegrating Punch with the macaque troop. The process was difficult — he was bullied by larger monkeys. Global outrage erupted online. The zoo explained that some friction is normal during primate reintegration and that isolation would cause far greater long-term harm.
Hope in March 2026
By March 2026, the world got the updates it had been praying for. NPR, Euronews, and US News all reported that Punch-kun was making real progress: making friends, being groomed by adult monkeys, gaining confidence, and using his beloved IKEA plushie less often.
